How to develop a functional gummy, from concept to production

Gummies are the most popular supplement format, and one of the hardest to get right. This is how a functional gummy goes from idea to finished product. Steps 1 through 5 happen with your formulator. Invicta picks it up at the pilot batch and takes it into production.

1. Define what the gummy needs to do

Start with the customer and the benefit. Who is it for, what should it help with, and how many gummies make a serving? Decide early on any must-haves, such as sugar-free, vegan or allergen-free, because they shape every decision that follows.

2. Choose the actives and the dose

List the active ingredients and the amount per serving. Some actives are easy to put in a gummy. Others are bitter, change color, react with other ingredients or break down with heat. The dose also affects gummy size and how many gummies a serving needs.

3. Pick the base

The base gives the gummy its structure and chew. Gelatin and pectin are the most common, and each behaves differently. Sugar-free bases use different sweeteners and bulking agents, which change how the gummy sets and how it holds up over time. Your requirements and actives determine which base fits.

4. Develop flavor, texture and appearance

This is where most of the work happens. Flavor systems are built to mask difficult actives. Texture is tuned for the right chew without being hard or sticky. Color and shape are chosen for the brand. Expect several rounds of bench samples.

5. Test stability

A gummy that's perfect on day one can sweat, harden, fade or lose potency over months. Stability work checks how the gummy behaves over time in its intended packaging, so the product your customer opens matches the one you approved.

6. Run a pilot batch

A pilot batch runs the formula on production equipment. It confirms the gummy sets, releases and packs the way it should at scale, and gives you real samples for final approval and marketing.

7. Package and produce

Gummies are commonly packed in bottles or stand-up pouches. Packaging affects shelf life, so it should be chosen with stability in mind. Once everything is approved, the gummy moves into full production.

What to look for in a gummy manufacturer

  • Experience producing functional gummies, not just stock gummies with your label
  • Experience with difficult bases, such as sugar-free
  • A clear sample, pilot and approval process
  • GMP manufacturing with batch records and lot traceability
  • Packaging and fulfillment options when you need them
